A mortar bomb lays outside a battle damaged section of the Ibn Sena Teaching Hospirtal in Mosul. At time of image capture, the assessment was that the hospital was previously occupied by Daesh forces, and had seen intense firefights between Daesh fighters and ISF (Iraqi Security Forces). Another section of the hospital was discovered to have been used for developing IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) where thousands of small arms ammunition had been dismantled to collect the propellant (or "gunpowder") within for illicit purposes. The additional complexity added to recent armed conflicts has been the management of battle damaged debris that has been contaminated with unexploded ordnance/bombs. This is foreseen to occur more frequently in future as more areas undergo urban development, with population densities rapidly increasing in economic centres. Exacerbating these conditions is also the indiscriminate use of area weapon systems (E.g. artillery) that leave unexploded ordnance not only on the surface and buried within rubble, but also underground in proximity of critical infrastructure like cables & piping.
