The presence of mortar bomb tail units are often indicative of armed conflict in a location, often accompanied by small arms fire. Mortar bomb weapon systems are often highly portable, simple in construction & use, and often deployed to destroy targets hiding behind walls and other structures where direct fire weapons cannot reach. Common uses include supporting firefights with small arms weapons. As these tail fin units are typically constructed to be a distance away from the mortar bomb body (where the main explosive charge is), they often survive the detonation relatively intact. The tail fin unit on the extreme right of the image has the appearance of sheared (or torn) metal. This is indicative that it was involved in a high explosive detonation event.
