The presence of small arms ammunition are common indicators of armed conflict in the area, and typically indicates the use of other weapon systems as well. Note how the small arms ammunition cartridge cases in this image have intact percussion caps (or primers) as the projectiles were removed to extract the propellant for other purposes. The various colours of cartridge cases also indicate the different construction methods, materials used, manufacturers, as well as corrosion protection. Though brass is a common material that is inherently corrosion resistant, other materials like varnish coated steel have also been used.
