Title: Close up of aerial bomb fuze

Description1:

The FMU 139 series of fuzes were developed for use in the MK 80 series aerial bombs. It is a self-contained electro-mechanical operated fuze with impact and impact-delay features. (Impact delay in this context means that the fuze does not detonate the bomb upon impact, but has a programmable delay that enables the bomb to detonate inside the target, as opposed to on top of it). It is typically installed in the tail/aft section of aerial bombs, and may be connected to additional sensors at the front of the aerial bomb to suit various mission requirements. Despite it's unpainted appearance and close resemblance to an innocuous mechanical part, it still contains highly sensitive explosive components that can injure and even kill when mishandled.
