Description¹:

A crudely manufactured metal container designed to contain the improvised explosives for incorporation into IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). The flat/low profile design facilitated rapid burial and concealment for quick deployment in large numbers. Note how the container, despite having welded parts (metal tabs for alignment), was folded to contain the explosive material, and protected by a plastic bag. This was a design limitation as once the explosive material was filled, no further sealing via welding could be safely done. A common type of explosives used in these IEDs are nitrate based (E.g. Ammonium Nitrate), enhanced with a metallic powder. Despite the ease of availability of these explosive precursors, they were extremely hygroscopic (water absorbent). This characteristic frequently caused the casing to swell, revealing the the position of the concealed IED.
