Submunitions are smaller explosive bomblets that are ejected from a cluster munition. They are typically designed to be launched from the ground over a target, or air dropped. They can be delivered by rockets, missiles, artillery projectiles & aerial bombs. The greatest hazard with unexploded submunitions is that they frequently resemble smaller machine parts (especially when found beside damaged vehicles & machinery), have sensitive fuzing that can detonate the submunition when mishandled, and have a wide variety of colours ranging from dull/drab to brightly coloured and/or unpainted. Although a lot of focus is placed on submunitions, an additional (but often overlooked) hazard comes from the large and heavy containers that were used to contain & store the submunitions. As these containers eject their payload over the target, they continue their flight in the direction fired (or dropped), causing additional injuries & damages. This submunition was assessed to be delivered by artillery projectiles or rockets.
