The round object in the middle foreground of the image was assessed to be the base of a 120mm tank ammunition cartridge. The unusual appearance of the cartridge case is due to the use of combustible materials that are consumed during firing. The majority of the casing was manufactured using nitrocelluose based materials (assessed), with a silicone-ringed metal base to trap gases during firing. An interesting feature of this design allows more propellant to be used, resulting in higher pressures for propelling the ammunition/round towards the target. Additionally, the use of non-metallic components reduces weight for handling, and greatly reduces the amount of exhaust gases that would have been typically trapped within more traditional metal cases when they were ejected back into the crew cabin of the vehicle after firing. This item was located in the proximity of a bridge, and suggests that this was a static tank deployment position to protect a location of tactical importance.
