This item was assessed to be a 40mm projected grenade model M430A1 that was fired but did not explode. Additional indicators were the engraving of the rotating (or driving) band located near the base of the grenade. Long and equally spaced "lines" running from the top to the bottom of the grenade are typical of the grenade having been fired through a rifled barrel. This model requires approx. 18 to 30m of flight to arm the fuze, and can reach distances of up to 2000m, penetrating up to 7.6cm of steel. Common causes for these grenades failing to function are striking the target at shallow angles, impacting a surface before the fuze has properly armed, striking soft surfaces (E.g. sand, soil), or manufacturing defects. This 40mm grenade was assessed to be one of the three common types used by NATO militaries, namely Low Velocity (LV), Medium Velocity (MV) and High Velocity (HV). The LV & MV variants are commonly fired from handheld weapons, and the HV variant (featured in image) fired from automatic grenade launchers.
