This item was assessed to be a Yugoslav illumination mortar, 81mm, model M67. The still attached safety clip on the fuze is an indicator that the mortar was not fired. The evenly spaced lines on the fuze are timing settings that are set just prior to firing in order to set the height for activation. The illumination mortar is typically used for illuminating large areas via a slow-descending flare suspended under a small parachute. The four evenly spaced grooves engraved around the circumference of this mortar acts as obturation during firing. They allow air to slip past the mortar body when it is dropped down the launch tube, but traps gas through turbulence upon firing. This item was most likely confiscated ammunition from destroyed weapon systems, or illicit ammunition stockpiles.
